1. Set up your alarm.
If you are not used to waking up early on your own, you need something external to help you out. You can decide to have an early riser wake you up or have an alarm do that for you. However, if you are used to waking up early even without the assistance of an alarm then you can skip this step.
Before you set up the alarm, you need to decide how many hours you want to be sleeping. You cannot choose a random time to wake up without considering what time and hours you will sleep. I do not advocate for you to follow anyone’s advice on the number of hours you should sleep because their life may differ from yours. When choosing the number of hours you will need for sleep, consider your age, work, gender and the place you live.
Let your decision be based from your own personal experience and what you believe to be the best for you. After you make that decision, decide what time you want to sleep. This will help you calculate your waking up time which will help you set your alarm correctly.
For example, If you want to be sleeping for eight hours and you usually go to bed at 9:00pm, then your waking up time should be 5:00am. Make sure that you choose a realistic time and one that you can stick with even during weekends and holidays. Consistency will help you get better results from your waking up time.
2. Move your alarm across your room or as far away as possible from your bed.
Now that you have set your alarm, you do not want to be in a situation whereby you are snoozing it. Therefore, you ought to place is far as possible from your bed. When it rings early in the morning, you will be forced to walk out of your bed. That simple motion will go a long way in helping you wake up. even when you decide to get back on your bed, you will already be awake.
The best way to get the most out of this simple trick is to switch on your light after walking to put off the alarm. One hack that I use to get myself to wake up and not to go back to sleep is to switch the lights on. I know that it seems so simple to have an impact but it works. Have you ever wondered why its so easy to wake up when sun rays reach you from your window?
This is because exposure to light suppresses production of melatonin. Melatonin which is produced by the pineal gland in the brain regulating the sleep wake cycle. Its production increases with darkness. Studies have been shown that melatonin can improve sleep which means that if its production is reduced, it helps keep you awake. So you can take advantage of this hormone and use it to help you wake up earlier. As soon as your alarm goes off, switch on your lights or open your curtains in case there is sunlight. You will notice that your desire to sleep reduces.
If you struggle to get out of bed or wake up, use this tip to help you wake up early. I hope this tip helps you to get out of bed every time.
3. Plan for the next day.
The night before is the best time to plan how you want to run your day. You already have an idea of where you will be going, who you will be meeting and what appointments you will be having. Its also the best time to decide what is and isn’t a priority. I wrote a detailed post on how to create a productive morning routine that will help you be more productive throughout the day. You will need a morning routine planner to assist you in planning for the day. I created a FREE one just for you that you can download down below.
4. Prepare everything that you will need to use for the next day.
Take your time to choose which outfit you will wear to the small things that you will carry along with you. If you are supposed to workout in the morning, put your workout outfit in a accessible place whereby you will easily wear it in the morning.
This point is more effective after you have planned for the next day. All you have to do is to check the to-do-list and prepare all the things you will need to execute your work. This is very important because it will help you save time and reduce your stress for the next day. You wouldn’t be in a hurry to look for things or stressed out because you can’t seem to find something important that you have to carry along with you.
You are also less likely to forget items because you carefully planned in advance and looked for the necessary things that you need.
5. Put away your phone and switch off the television.
Since you need to be fully rested in order for you to be able to wake up early, putting away your phone and switching off the television will go a long way. As I earlier said in the second point, light suppresses the production of melatonin especially blue light. This blue light is found in phone screens, televisions, computers or laptops.
Therefore, exposing yourself to this light before bedtime will make you struggle to fall asleep. However, if you keep your phone away and switch off the television, you allow your mind to relax and fall asleep. Besides, you are aiming to wake up as early as possible and be productive.
6. Take a warm and relaxing bath
In my detailed post on hacks that you can use to fall asleep instantly at night, I highlighted that taking a warm bath not only helps you relax so that you can fall asleep but also assists to lower your body temperature which is needed for you to fall asleep.
Emphasis is put on warm bath rather than a cold one because a cold one has been shown to shock your body which doesn’t produce the desired results.Taking a warm bath will relax your body and mind. After having a long day its only fair to treat yourself.
7. Diffuse essential oils
Essential oils are commonly used for aromatherapy whereby they are inhaled in various methods. They are used for relieving stress and anxiety, headaches and migraines, and sleep and insomnia. It can also be used to reduce inflammation by providing antibiotic and antimicrobial aid depending on the type and essential oil blend. In this case, we will use essential oils to help you relax which in turn will help you sleep well and wake up early with minimal effort.
I have a detailed post on the best essential oils to diffuse to help you fall asleep at night. you can read it over here.
8. Use affirmations to help you wake up early the next day
This is my favorite point so far and I use it to help me wake up early which has to be done the night before. Since I wake up at five every morning, I go to bed repeating a mantra which is, “I will wake up tomorrow at 5:00am”. Using affirmations is so effective because it conditions your subconscious mind to bring your words to reality. When you go to bed, keep telling yourself positive words and that you will wake up at the time you choose with no doubt. You will be surprised to know that you will be awake even before your alarm rings.
9. Read a self help book that will motivate you to wake up early
There is something about self help books that makes you want to get into action. I have recently gotten into the routine of reading a chapter of a book before sleeping because I am not distracted. It has proven to be very effective especially when you are reading a book that speaks to you on a personal level. . I highly recommend this book for you to read before bed at least a chapter a day. You will see how productive you will be in no time. He also teaches how to plan for your day and determine what is a priority and what isn’t.
10. Be consistent
In order to make the most out of your morning and night routine, you need to be consistent. Wake up and sleep at the same time everyday until it becomes natural to you. Starting a night routine will not yield you much results. You will notice that you will soon get tired of it and give up.
So get yourself into the rhythm of sleeping and waking up at the same everyday and it will soon become easy for you.
Parting shot
Having a night routine not only helps you sleep well but also wake up early. It might not seem significant but it has a big impact on how your whole day will turn out.
