Let’s dive right in!
1.Snoozing your alarm
This is pretty basic and I know that you expected me to mention this. Look, when you snooze your alarm, you lose. You lose your time to be productive, your willpower and you lose your energy.
I know that you might think that this is easier said than done. But guess what, anything is possible as long as you get into the right mindset.I am currently reading a book titled Beyond The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind by C. James Jensen and I can tell you that I have realized how much power we hold in our hands yet we give it away by allowing limiting beliefs to dwell in your subconscious.
The author clearly states that, “We don’t get what we want ,we get what we expect.” So if you expect not to wake up immediately after your alarm goes off, guess what, you will snooze your alarm. Of course at the back of your mind, you might want to wake up immediately but you have a little devil reminding you that you will snooze your alarm no matter what.
So your mind accepts what you tell it and it works to bring it into reality.
2. Scrolling on social media
Imagine waking up early in the morning and allowing a thousand people into your bedroom? You haven’t brushed your teeth yet and your face is not pleasant to look at. How would you feel at that moment? Maybe grumpy or cranky. I do not know but one thing I know for sure is that that experience is unpleasant.
What if I tell you that scrolling through social media is giving other people access to you immediately after waking up. You have had little time for yourself and you are not yet ready to give your energy to other people. Social media is wonderful but it can also deprive you of the happiness that you deserve especially after waking up.
We live in a world where everyone is comparing themselves with others. Even if you don’t, how do you feel knowing that someone had a better morning than you? Maybe you might be happy for them. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. Give yourself the self care you deserve before giving anyone else your attention.
3. Checking your emails for work
Most people get caught into this mix because they assume that they will receive an important email from work and it needs your immediate attention. Your email will still be in your inbox at 9:00am. That means that you can read it at that time and respond to it afterwards. If something is urgent, I do not think that anyone will use an email to address it.
So relax and let go of the anxiety and focus on self care. Carry out your morning routine as you are supposed to and then check your emails when you have made sure that you are also taken care of.
4. Having your coffee first thing after waking up
I am not a fan of coffee so I do not know how it feels to wake up and immediately drink it but I do know that You are not supposed to do that. Coffee fans, I am sorry to kill your party but it’s unhealthy for you to drink it immediately after waking up.
Depending on the number of hours that you sleep, your body remains dehydrated for those number of hours. So drinking coffee immediately after waking up is not the best way to approach dehydration. Begin your day by drinking two to three cups of water before drinking your coffee. That way, your body is going to be hydrated enough to handle caffeine. The best part is that drinking water beats fatigue and helps you be fully awake hence preventing you from wanting to go back to sleep.
5. Watching Television
After you wake up, your mind is energized and ready to begin your day unless you have a hangover or you did not get enough sleep and you wake up feeling tired. Watching television immediately after waking up is a bad idea simply because it is not necessary.
You have other duties to perform and that means that when you decide to watch television, you will waste a lot of time doing nothing which will lead you to procrastinate. The easiest way to get things done is not to put off activities and to get your most difficult tasks complete first before moving to the simpler ones. Watching television is not a task that should be in your to-do list but a luxury.

6. Not eating a healthy breakfast
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it needs to be something that will keep you energized. As much as eating ice cream might be your favorite activity of your day, you might want to postpone it till later in the day.
Your body hasn’t been fed for over seven hours. So it deserves to be treated with a healthy diet to kick start digestion on a good note. This is the most important thing that you can do for yourself because it will keep you active and energized no matter what.
7. Eating right away after waking up
Your body has been in resting mode for over seven hours and it needs time to fully wake up before you junk down food into it. There are various activities that you can do before eating to help you wake up. You can;
When you allow yourself to be fully awake, then you can have your breakfast. The book The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod, will give you guidance on how you can practice the above activities to harness success. He summarizes the activities into an acronym S.A.V.E.R.S
- Silence
- Affirmations

8. Not having a morning routine in place
Robin Sharma said that ,” An extraordinary life is all about daily, continuous improvements in the areas that matter most.” and I cannot disagree. I believe that morning hours are the best to use for personal growth because you are energized and have little to no disturbance.
If you are yet to create a morning routine, you need to know that you are missing out on a lot of unharnessed potential. It not only keeps you organized but also helps you grow as a person because of the activities that you perform during your morning routine.
